Shea's Buffalo

Shea Performing Arts Center

Shea's Buffalo is a theater known for touring Broadway musicals and hosting special events in Buffalo, New York. Shea’s Perf. Arts Center was opened in 1926 and was used to show silent movies. The first silent film shown at the theater in 1926 was the King of Main Street, which stared Adolphe Menjou. The theater was designed by a firm with the name Rapp and Rapp of Chicago. For the first twenty years, The theater was one of the finest in the country. When Buffalo was in decline, the theater fell into some despair in the 1960s and 1970s. At the time, the owner of the theater Leon Lawrence Sidell was failing to pay his taxes.
In order to save the theater from ruins, a group of concerned people formed The Friends of Buffalo Theater. The troop of volunteers learned the art of restoration and shared techniques with one another that were used in mold making, wood refinishing, and sewing to help improve this historic venue. This non-for-profit organization brought restoration to the theater and got it listed on the National Register for Historic Places. There was a grand re-opening that was held in the late 1970s with Cab Calloway and George Burns. Calloway had performed at the theater in its opening week in 1926 and Burns performed at the theater in the 1940s.

What's Happening Now at The Shea's

In the 1930s, the theater staged vaudeville shows and played host to artists such as Frank Sinatra, George Burns, Bob Hope and many more. Some upcoming shows these days are Hamilton, Cats, Miss Saigon, Rent, and the classic show Fiddler on the Roof. Back in the late 1970s, Broadway stage manager and producer Robert B. D’Angelo booked tours for shows such as: A Chorus Line, Annie, Chicago, and Les Miserable to perform at the theater. This helped to reestablish the theater as an important stop on the Broadway tour circuit.
Next bid show is Hamilton the Musical coming November of 2018 to Shea's
